What motivates you to keep coming back as a mentor?
Having over three decades of professional experience, I am at that stage of my life, wherein I would love to help people grow and achieve what they want. It gives me pleasure to help society and give back, whichever way I can. I can spare time and help, and this is what I love to do. It is not only that I am helping them, but I am also learning at the same time. Meeting different people from diverse cultures and ethnicities is something which I cherish.
What would be your top tip for a new volunteer mentor?
Have empathy and listen to what your mentees are sharing with you and do not impose your thoughts.
What has been your top aha mentoring moment?
When a mentee emails me, that they were successful in achieving their goals, and acknowledging my efforts and help. It is the best moment for me.
Has becoming a mentor also helped you succeed in your own career? If so, how?
What I experienced as a mentor is looking beyond the cultures and ethnicity. I am a person who tries to learn from all. I am a firm believer that every individual is unique and has something to offer. Whether you take it or not, it is up to you, and I would like to learn anything which is a unique experience in life.
In one sentence, describe the importance of mentoring for newcomers starting their career in Canada?
A newcomer in an unfamiliar environment needs a helping hand and a mentor is the person who can lend that hand to make them feel comfortable in their new surroundings.
