“Newcomers are facing the same challenges that I did when I arrived from Hong Kong 20 years ago. Sometimes a little information or insight is all they need, and could make a big difference. I think this is especially true in a regulated profession, such as accounting.”

Why I started mentoring

I like to help people. Also, the City Manager at that time encouraged staff to sign up. It seemed like a worthwhile program.

Why I have mentored so many times

I can relate to all the mentees I meet. I arrived during the recession and it was extremely difficult. If I had had a mentor, my job search would have been much easier.

The professional development opportunity

It’s been a real asset to get to know and understand people of different cultures, especially because the City has such diversity on staff.  It’s particularly helpful to me when managing a diverse team.

What makes mentoring special

It feels good to build up friendships with skilled immigrants new to Toronto. Sometimes mentees come back to visit me and I like that.

What I tell my mentees

A lot of them have the right skills, but they can’t find the right job. They have to know that most immigrants have the same challenge and they can overcome it.
